On the morning of my third day in God’s Own Country—Kerala, India—I set out on a mind-blowing Kerala breakfast food tour where I tried appam, puttu, spicy egg curry, and duck roast in Alappuzha, India! Come along with me and my boy Vishnu as I continue exploring the wonderful world of Kerala cuisine!

Vishnu:

I began my day at 6 a.m. at beautiful Varkala Beach in Varkala, Kerala, India. I was super excited to head two hours north to the city of Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha! This amazing city is located in the legendary Kerala Backwaters, which are known for their natural beauty and world-famous houseboats!

We followed an extremely narrow road lined with houses and palm trees and eventually hit the highway that connects Varkala to Kollum. After a while, we stopped at Ezhuthanikada Restaurant. While they opened for us, we went across the street to have some delicious, café con leche-like chai.

Back at Ezhuthanikada Restaurant, we watched them make appams and parottas in the kitchen. They also had a yellow, sweet cake called vettucake, tata dosas, and a curry made of tomatoes, onion, and coconut oil. I wanted to try everything!

The vettucake was like a hot, fresh, and dense muffin made with maida, sugar, and cardamom. It was sweet, with a crispy outside and doughy interior. I loved dipping into the chai and absorbing the milky cardamom and ginger flavor.

Then, I dove into the appams, papadum, and egg curry. Temperature-wise, the curry was
super hot and delicious. It had lots of onions and was very tomato-heavy, but it wasn’t spicy. The crunchy papadum with the spongy appam and the rich curry was such an incredible combination. It was my type of meal! It was even better (but even messier) after I broke up the egg in the curry!

After washing my hands, we hopped back in the car and continued toward Alappuzha.

Once we got there, we stopped at the Brothers Hotel, where visited the kitchen and watched them make a steamed coconut flour dish called puttu. I was going to have it with both fish curry and duck curry. We also saw how they make herbal karingali water.

Back at our table, I added some fish curry on one side of the puttu and mixed it in with my fingers. The puttu was really fluffy and dense, while the curry was still steaming hot. I loved the flavor of the fish curry with the sweet coconut and different rice flours. It wasn’t too spicy. The fish was super buttery!

Next, I got some of the duck and its gravy and put it on the other side of the puttu. The duck meat was so yummy and buttery. The spices and black pepper in it were heavenly. I love duck way more than chicken, even though it had small bones in it. I loved the spices from the curry and the sweet coconut together! It was super filling because of the amount of rice flour.

Then, I tried the karingali water, which was pink-tinted water with a bit of an earthy taste. It’s made from the bark of a tree and was really hot and nice.

Finally, we had some chai to finish off our meal. It was completely milky white on the bottom. On top was a liquor tea. You stir it up to mix it all together. It had the perfect heat level and was amazing. It was really unique and tasty!

What an epic Kerala breakfast food tour in Alappuzha, India! I could not believe how incredible these dishes were. When you come to Kerala, you have to try all of them. Just remember to wash your hands before and after!

@un known The appam David is eating is Palappam. There is Kallappam or appam without the lace. Also vatta appam which is made in Appachatty. Then there is idiyappam which is like noodles. All these foods are very familiar to you as you live in Pala. But move to north and south of Kerala you dont find these easily available in all chaya kada.

@RayPlaysRoblox i am also from central travancore. from palai. i didnt find any unique cousine from here.. appam is a widepsread cuisine of kerala. casava is also famous in all around kerala and tvm is best for casava and its kappa biriyani. i think north malabar is best in kerala for all kind of food. central travancore knows liquor only. even palai nowadays follows some mappila delicasy because pala is close to some mappila region..
